We met in the church for chapel, I was in the most ideal place ( apparently) to have opening prayer( which I didn't know I was doing). It was all good though, No Biggy... We sang a few songs. All of the Sm's were up in front. It was a lot of fun. We were lined up from Pre-K- High school grades. It went from girls to Boys. Because there is only one girl teaching in the high school. After song service Mr. Solomon, He is an amazing person. He was the English teacher last year and is the head of maintenance, but with out an acting principal he has taken on many responsiblities and done very well. Then one of the other Sm's prayed to close. We then introduced ourselves. Good morning, " My name is Miss Kaitlin and I will be teaching the 5th grade", My kids were whispering to each other and pointing... almost like " I told you it was here... I knew that... You are in my Personal Space- Cut It Out." Once everyone was introduced, we all took our kids from the church to our classrooms. I had 10 Students for the first few minuets then I got two more. We went over the class rules and procedures. And our discipline, Which I told them that we are playing a game all year. The entire class is on one team and we are going to play a Baseball game. They were loving it at first, But as the days are going on and they are getting a few strikes they are not as impressed. But it is working.
After recess, which was about 1 and a half of the day. I was done with everything that I had planned, and so I had to think on my toes for over two hours. The kids know when you haven't planned. And they know your Fears. So with the first day down, I honestly felt like crying. It was bad. but I held it together. Talking with a few other teachers, in comparison I have a really great class!
So on the the second day, Every morning the children have a morning task to finish. It is posted on the board. The came into the room quietly and calmly ( spectacular) and finished their assignment. Then we had two new students come and our number was up to 12. We worked on how to title their papers... MLA format... Then we went over the school rules and handbooks. The second day went much better, I had planned stuff to do for the entire day. This week is all half days. Thank You Jesus. We sang songs, and we had worship. I read the book that my 7th-12th grade teacher, Mrs. Price read to us for worship " Tales of the Kingdom". They think it is brilliant. I am loving it, I can remember Mrs.Price reading it to us before 7th grade science.
It is hard to describe what all went on, it is very much a blur. But when I was going over the procedures and handbook for the school, the maintenance for the school ( they were still working on fixing the high school building) were sawing, hammering and blaring music. So I was not about to just stop class for the noise. I was yelling out the rules about what not to bring on campus, about attendance, ect. I checked to make sure that all of them could hear me, they answered yes, I am not sure if they were just being nice or not because I could barley hear myself think let alone my voice.
I also took pictures of the kids, they really enjoyed that. I had one of each kid on their first day of school. They are a funny, artistic, and brilliant class. I know that I am not able to teach this class on my own, but I can already see God working though me. My weak points are still very much inside me, however God has helped me to realized that everything is going to be okay. And I am carrying around a dictionary, because all of the children are asking me how to spell words. Freaked me out the first day, but I am slowly getting better. Who know I might be able to spell by the end of the year.
Today they came in and started on their morning task.1. What is your favorite animal 2. what is one of the things that we do NOT bring to school? 3. What is your favorite number? * Once you are done with your morning task please come to my desk and get your name tag.I now have 14 students, only one of them came in late. They have been really good so far. I prayed to open the class then started worship we sang 4 songs, Father Abraham, I am in the Lords army, ect. Then we have announcements: I talked about pen pals and how we will be having two fifth grade classes in CA that we will be pen pals with. Talking about the open house on the 23rd. How they have to be in the proper uniform next week. And I announced how I got a package from my aunt and one from my grandma and that they sent me stuff for them, they were incredibly excited about the stickers.
Then I read from the book Tales of the kingdom and closed with prayer. After I couldn't find the cross word puzzle that we were going to do I had them practice the Brain dance, which if you do not know what that is... Google it. I learned about it in my elementary music class this past year... Yes I actually learned something is a class and I am applying it in real life. AMAZING.
We have been working on writing a paper the past two days that will be up in the classroom with their pictures on the open house night. They are writing about themselves, their families, their homes, what they want to be when they grow up ect. Some of them write only one sentence for every question. The first day, a few, only wrote down the question. But That is how it is going to be in every subject. Some are going to be better at different subjects than others.
We went over how to write their names again in MLA format.
Then I gave them recess to go and find the crossword puzzle. I finally found it, So I called all of the kids back into the classroom and they started the puzzle. It was about all of the words that the class had put onto the word wall the day before. Day 2: side note: they learned how to use a dictionary. After they were done with the puzzle they had choices to make. ( choices are big in our class) They could help someone else finish their cross word, or they could read, or they could build a fish puzzle. I had music playing in the background since they had come back in and they, the entire time stayed under the sound level of the music. The were really well behaved. So I figured, no need to change anything just let it ride out till they want to switch or till they get loud. Well 30 min.s later they were still quiet. So I decided to read to them the book " Rainbow Fish" and they liked it. And then we compared it to Matt 25:14-30. The kids did a really good job and they had a lot of opinions. Then we had DEAR time and after than we made a birthday poster for every month. I have one kid who has a birthday this friday. He is very shy, but very artistic. More things happened today, but I really don't have the time to explain them. I need to lesson plan for tomorrow and all of next week.
Day Three, Done
